Design & Build

This project was procured as a direct award contract through the Scape Framework and involved the refurbishment of the Oakham Fire Station, a large fire station operating the Day Crew Plus system which requires a crew to remain on station for a week, with permission for their families to stay overnight.

The project brief included a new build training house, a new build extension accommodating five en-suite bedrooms, a common room and kitchen and full refurbishment of the existing fire station including a new kitchen, a lecturer room, locker rooms, offices, one-to-one meeting rooms and a new gym.

The first phase of the project comprised the re-roofing of the appliance building, during which time the appliances were parked outside for ten weeks. G F Tomlinson arranged external power to be available to allow each appliance to be kept on trickle charge 24 hours. We maintained the safety of the appliances by employing security cover at night and over the weekends.

Concurrent with the re-roofing of the appliance building we completed the demolition of the training house and the construction of the foundations for the overnight accommodation.

Tim Hiskins, Station Manager at Oakham Fire Station, said: “The redevelopment is very good for the people who work there and it provides a long term future for staff with facilities to go forward with. We’ve now got everything that is needed for a fire station where officers can work 24-hour shifts and have a working base for many years to come.”
