The Quality, Safety & Environmental Management System (QSE) outlines the operational procedures implemented within each company of the G F Tomlinson Group of companies which is UKAS third party accredited to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018

The QSE manual has developed over a number of years and is regularly reviewed to reflect the changing needs of the business, legislative requirements and the needs of the client.
The QSE manual includes company policies, procedures and the arrangements in place to ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental, Quality standards as well as legislative, ethical, moral and the commercial requirements and aspects of the business.

The pre-construction and construction teams finalise project inputs from our bid team comprising of:
Planner, Design Manager, Contracts Manager and Bid Manager. A formal contract handover meeting takes place between our estimating team and the construction team.


Following formal award of project contract pre-start meetings take place with the client and the GFT construction team including: Contracts Manager, Project Manager, Design Manager and Quantity Surveyor to ensure all design aspects are agreed in line with the client’s brief.
Work begins with the set up of the construction site and mobilisation of site teams and welfare cabins. At this stage we also obtain legal responsibility for the site. A typical site team includes: Construction Team. Project Manager. Site Manager. Logistics Manager (dependant on site constraints) all overseen by a Contracts Manager.


The GFT team and the Client team review construction and financial progress on site via monthly progress meetings. At the meeting will always be our Construction Director, Contracts Manager, Project Manager, Design Manager and Quantity Surveyor.The project will be continually monitored to ensure a high quality is achieved.
Contract reviews take place on a monthly basis. Meetings examine site issues & sub-contractor performance. The GFT design team and Client team discuss any design changes as the project progresses, ensuring the project continues to run to programme and to budget.

Prior to site completion we will begin to produce the Building User Guide and collate all of the information from our sub-contractors ready for the Client to ensure a soft landing approach.
Our Aftercare team will also visit site to familiarise themselves with the building and introduce themselves to the Client ready for handover.
A handover and completion strategy identifies the arrangements for testing, commissioning, snagging and defects so that the building is ready for handover on completion.
Our Aftercare Team will continue to be on hand to address any post handover queries.


Our Health and Safety Management System is accredited to ISO 45001:2018 and forms part of the company’s UKAS accredited Quality, Safety & Environmental Management System (QSE). We are also a SIPP accredited contractor as part of our certification to the CHAS and Alcumus SafeContractor schemes.
In-house Health, Safety and Environmental Team
We have a team of in-house professionally qualified Health, Safety and Environmental Advisors.
They are responsible for conducting regular site visits, inspections and audits on site, independent from the Project Delivery Team. Information from these on-site assessments are used to review performance and develop plans for ongoing improvement.
The team are also available to provide, training, induction, toolbox talks and ongoing advise with regards to all health, safety and environmental matters.

Safety Representatives
All our sites have Safety Representatives whose key role is to notify potential hazards in the workplace. They also participate in the consultation and communication process with the management on Health & Safety matters.
Our workforce undertakes regular Health and Safety Training. We monitor the Health and Safety Plan to ensure our staff have the skills to fulfil their tasks with zero risk.
We employ CFIOSH qualified Health, Safety and Environmental Advisors who organise all Training for the Company which includes trade specific competency training.
Safety Committees
Consultation of Health, Safety and Welfare Issues takes place on a formal basis every 6-8 weeks. All aspects of Health & Safety are addressed so we can continually provide a Safe Working Environment for all our employees and our supply chain.
Improving Accident Prevention
The Company implements performance reviews on several levels throughout the organisation in order to monitor, review and continually improve the high standards we already achieve on Health and Safety. These take the form of:-
• Accident Investigation.
• Site Inspections.
• Regular Site Meetings.
• Monthly Director Meetings.
• Annual Review Meetings.
• ‘I prevented an Accident’ initiatives and near miss reporting.
All accidents are recorded and are analysed by the Group Health and Safety Officer to determine trends and implement preventative measures.

Our commitment to training provides local people with lifelong learning opportunities. We promote Continuous Professional Development (CPD), which enhances the overall level of education of our local workforce.
Training plays a major role within the Company and we have a training review plan in place for each member of staff so that training needs can be evaluated and implemented.
All of our production and technical workforce are CSCS accredited and provision to attain this is provided by the Company. All employees attend in-house Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Training to keep them up-to-date with the requirements in respect of legislation and the Company’s policies and management systems.
We also encourage all staff to attend company CPD events in order to gain professional status and to improve their continuous professional development.
We dedicate over 2,700 person hours a year to CPD.
We consistently recruit apprentices/technical trainees on an annual basis throughout the group, all of which participate in fully recognised apprenticeship training schemes.
We work closely with local schools and colleges from Year 10 and 11 students upwards about the opportunities for a career in the construction industry. This includes providing mock interviews, site tours, work experience and presentations from our trained in-house Construction Ambassadors.
