Pupils at The Bemrose School will benefit from expertise and practical help after forging the partnership with contractor G F Tomlinson.
The firm, which is based in Alfreton Road, is currently building a new sports centre at the school in Uttoxter New Road, which is due to open later this month.
They have agreed to work with the school for two years, as part of the East Midlands Property Alliance’s Adopt a School programme.
The scheme aims to promote construction as an aspirational career choice to both boys and girls, as well as highlighting the range of job opportunities available within the industry.
G F Tomlinson has pledged to stage a construction-themed activity for pupils once a term and support the school with careers talks and mock interviews. It will also provide work experience placements and invite students on escorted visits to see working construction sites.
Executive head teacher Neil Wilkinson said: “While work has been progressing on our new sports centre, staff from G F Tomlinson have been very supportive, allowing some of our pupils to carry out their work experience on site.
“We are delighted to be able to cement this working relationship further. We aim to introduce all our pupils to activities and experiences which don’t necessarily fit into the normal school curriculum, but which will enhance their breadth of knowledge and skills once they leave school.”
“The programme will provide pupils with the opportunity to understand more about the industry through project-based learning. We hope this will be a unique learning experience, enabling them to see the wide variety of skilled roles available in the construction industry, and understand how professionals work together on real projects.”
Through the partnership, it is hoped students will consider a career in construction and help to address a shortage of talent in the industry.”
As part of the new link, pupils and staff will receive construction industry training and there could be possible scholarships or apprenticeships for post 16 students.

“We hope to highlight the range of job opportunities within the industry which, as well as traditional trades such as brickwork and joinery and professions such as site engineering, site management and quantity survey, can also be in marketing, purchasing or accounts.”
