Following graduation from Loughborough University with a degree in Civil Engineering I have enjoyed what is approaching a 30-year career in the construction industry.
The roles I have fulfilled, generous people I have worked with, and projects delivered have all contributed to a broad & technical operational knowledge that I bring to my role as Construction Director. Primarily working in a Tier 1 main contractor like many I started out as a Site Engineer ensuring our buildings were in the right place and meeting the specified quality standards. My responsibilities increased as I progressed through the ranks of Senior Engineer, Construction Manager, Project Manager and latterly Project Director on an £140m EfW power station – assuming operational control for all safety, quality, time, commercial and strategic outcomes.
In 2017 I joined the GF Tomlinson family – having largely worked nationally for over 20 years. One disappointment I repeatedly felt when leaving a completed project was the understanding it was unlikely that team would work together again due to the geographic diversity of the site locations. Successful relationships had been established across the customer, design, supply chain and operational teams – only for the benefit of those maturing teams to dwindle away. Thus, I was keen to return to my Derbyshire roots and, largely working across the East and West Midlands, develop those longer-term relationships that can bring strong benefits to our service delivery.
My sector experience has included industrial logistics, residential/commercial mixed use, education, MoJ, MoD, operational policing and firearms, energy, hygienic food production, rail & HV. These have been delivered through a variety of contractual relationships including JCT D&B, JCT Traditional, NEC, EPC and PFI. These experiences have supported my successful achievement of MICE, CEng and MCIOB status. In 2012 I was awarded the silver medal by the CIOB at the Construction Manager of the Year awards for the £42m Rowley Learning Campus school – who focussed on the stakeholder management, CSR and sustainability successes delivered.
