I began my career in the construction industry in 1990, with the dream of emulating my Uncle John in becoming a Quantity Surveyor.
As part of my employment and training with a regional main contractor, I was exposed to all aspects of the business, spending valuable time within the Estimating, Planning/Programming, Contracts Management, Design and Build, Material Buying, Accounts and Quantity Surveying departments and also on site , assisting the Site Engineer.
It became apparent that whilst my initial ambitions to become a Quantity Surveyor was fully justified, I also particularly enjoyed the role of Site Engineer and after quite a long successful spell on site, I came to a crossroads in my career and had to decide whether I followed my heart – the Quantity Surveying route or to venture down the Site Engineering route, I chose the former and have not regretted it since. I progressed from Trainee, to Assistant, to Project and then to Senior Quantity Surveyor during a 14-year spell with the same regional building contractor.
Following a brief spell of 2 years with a national building contractor, I joined G F Tomlinson in 2006 as Senior Quantity Surveyor fulfilling the role on numerous prestigious Projects within different market sectors using varied forms of Contract, which also included the measurement and pricing of the projects at tender stage. I have subsequently gained promotion to Managing Surveyor, then Commercial Manager, Associate Commercial Director and I am now Commercial Director being fully responsible for all commercial aspects of the business.
I feel very proud and honoured that I am Director of such an established, traditional, family-run business with such a good reputation and believe it fitting that the ‘family’ ethos of the business through its’ Visions and Values is extended to each of the individual members of our staff, something I take great delight in encouraging.
